We feel that the term “kaleidoscope” is a powerful symbol that reflects both the importance of each individual and the resiliency of our lupus community! We believe there is strength in numbers, and beauty in the uniqueness of each person in our community. It takes many like you to make a kaleidoscope!
The medical reason for this change ….
Lupus, more and more, is recognized as a collection of symptoms and autoimmune manifestations not just a single, distinct disease. In order to describe this change, the medical community is referring to lupus as a “kaleidoscope” autoimmune disease – where causes and symptoms seem to move and change.
The butterfly reason …
Our organization adopted the butterfly as our symbol from the very beginning. It has been reflected in our logos and is a theme of our website. As we broaden our mission to the larger community, we want this metaphor to continue to represent us – all of us – a collection of butterflies – a kaleidoscope of butterflies!
We would be remiss if we did not stop and reflect on how this all began. We want to thank our vanguard and fearless founders, Debbie and Molly McCabe, along with a dedicated board, who gave of their time, talents and treasures to launch our fight against lupus.
